WEO and A-PSDE (Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy) co-hosted a symposium on artificial intelligence (AI) in endoscopy during Asian Pacific Digestive Week 2023 on the 9th of December 2023. We invited prominent speakers from the Asian region who kindly shared their knowledge, experience, and perspective:

• Prof. Han-Mo Chiu, AI in colonoscopy screening,

• Prof. Rungsun Rerknimitr), AI in biliary endoscopy,

• Prof. Viet-Hang Dao, AI for endoscopy education), and

• Prof Lawrence Ho, AI for gastric cancer screening.

The)WEO AI Committee, in the persons of its Chair, Prof. Yuichi Mori, and WEO President, Professor Tajiri, supported the program development and chairing of the session, together with Prof. Nonthalee Pausawasdi).

The application of AI in endoscopy is a global movement with the Asian region obviously providing one of the strongest driving forces in this academic field; many emerging concepts about AI in endoscopy have been proposed in recent years, with a great quantity of medical imaging material used for the machine learning process. We discussed roughly two important topics throughout the session:

(1) The application of AI in separate but important areas, such as screening programs for colorectal and gastric cancers, and biliary endoscopy.

(2) The processes and challenges in global implementation of AI technology, including patients’ perspectives and reactions, legal liabilities, ethics issues, and education of junior endoscopists.

The WEO AI Committee is proud to have successfully co-hosted this important session with APSDE. It is ready to continue close collaboration with regional societies including in the Asian region to achieve the Committee’s goal, namely “Global scale research activity in AI and raising awareness of AI in physicians, patients, and policy makers.”

Advanced Diagnosis Endoscopy Course (ADEC)

The ADEC took place successfully as a pre-conference activity on December 6, 2023. In cooperation with A-PSDE and the Japan Gastroenterological Society (JGES), the course directors, Dr. Jean-Francois Rey (France), Dr. Shinji Tanaka (Japan), and Dr. Noriya Uedo (Japan) invited prominent local and international experts to deliver lectures on state-of-the-art knowledge and research.

Designed as a highly interactive experience, the ADEC also featured real-time quizzes following each lecture, to test the audience’s understanding and knowledge.

The Colorectal Cancer Screening Committee (CRC SC)

The Colorectal Cancer Screening Committee (CRC SC) was happy to join forces once again with the APDW in 2023 to bring attendees the latest research and insights in the field of CRC screening.

The CRC SC sessions took place on December 6, 2023, in Bangkok, Thailand as part of the main Congress. The first session was about combating post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer (PCCRC), and was chaired by Prof. Evelien Dekker, WEO CRC SC Global Chair, and Prof. Satimai Aniwan. In the second session speakers addressed hot topics in CRC screening, and this session was chaired by Prof. Han-Mo Chiu, WEO CRC SC Asian Chair and Dr. Taya Kitiyakara. Kudos to all the speakers, moderators, and participants for making this a successful event!
